  1. Initially had an idea of an automatic rebar-tying robot, Tybot. 
  2. Did a brief search up but was not familiar with it as it was not used in Singapore.
  3. Someone in class asked if this project could be group work and the Prof said yes.
  4. Irham decided to form a group on a tunnelling machine used in the Deep Tunnelling Sewage System (DTSS).
  5. The idea was interesting and hence agreed to work with Irham on the tunnelling machine used in DTSS.
  6. After some research, the team found out that the specific brand and model of the tunnelling machine is called 'Herrenknecht Mixshield S-1144'.

This quote suggests that even when engineers simplify their work to the general public and the efforts to break it down, the technical aspects remain a difficulty for public understanding. The technical details, even when simplified, might be too much for a non-technical audience to grasp. Having experienced this first-hand. The way to tackle this challenge is not to just break it down into simpler understanding. It is much more efficient to use analogies in their daily lives for the public to understand better. It is solely up to the engineers how imaginative they are to make the public understand via analogies.

According to Harding,(2017), Mixshield is a slurry tunnel boring machine (TBM) that uses an air bubble to control and support pressure at the face made by Herrenknecht. This is further explained by Herrenknecht. The TBM has an automatic air cushion that precisely controls the face support pressure in the excavation chamber (Herrenknecht,2024). It also offers an array of powerful cutting tools such as cutting knives and disc cutters. It is enhanced by jawcrushers positioned in front of the intake screen to further breakdown boulders and stones into conveyable size pieces (Herrenknecht, 2024). According to Herrenknecht and Rehm, the TBM can excavate and build a ring around the machine continuously (Herrenknecht and Rehm). This is supported by Herrenknecht’s claim that the TBM is able to do so with the help from its erector and thrust system.
